Privacy
Short, because SpecSheet does very little that involves us.
What the program sends
Once, when you activate: your licence key, and a one-way
hash of this PC's Windows installation id, to activate.probe-specsheet.com.
That is the whole list, and the program says the same sentence on screen
before you press the button.
When you remove the licence from a PC: the same two things, so the key can be freed for another PC.
When you buy from inside the program: how many keys, and a random code the program makes up so that it alone can collect the key once you have paid. Nothing about the PC. The payment itself happens on Stripe's page, in your browser.
Only if you say yes, when it starts: a check for updates.
It asks probe-specsheet.com for one file, and sends only the version
you are running. The program asks before it ever checks, and you can turn it
off from the Help menu.
At every other moment: nothing. There is no telemetry, no usage reporting, no crash upload and no licence check-in. After activation the program works with the network unplugged, and does.
What the program never sends
Anything about the machine you scanned. Not its real serial numbers, hardware UUID, asset tag, MAC addresses, IP addresses, DNS servers, product key fragment, BitLocker volume IDs or the name Windows is registered to. No disk contents, no user names, no facts, not even a count of them. The report exists on your machine and goes wherever you choose to put it.
Reports are written where you ask. SpecSheet does not upload one, and there is nowhere for it to upload one to.
Identifiers inside the report
By default the report shows identifying values as shapes rather than themselves. You can turn that off when you need the real serials — the window warns you while they are showing, and the exported page and the printed report carry the same warning, so a file that contains them says so on its face.
What this website collects
The site is static files. There is no analytics script, no advertising pixel, no cookie set by us, and no font or script fetched from anywhere else. The host records ordinary server logs — the request, the time and the IP address — which is how a web server works.
Buying is handled by Stripe, which sells SpecSheet on our behalf as merchant of record, works out sales tax, and sends your receipt. We never see your card number. What we receive is the email address on the order, the amount, and the date, which we keep so we can find your order when you ask for help. We use that address once, to email you your licence keys, sent through our mail provider, Resend. No newsletters, nothing else.
The licence database. For each key we keep a scrambled form of the key (not the key itself), its status, and for the PC it is activated on, the one-way fingerprint and the dates it was activated. That is how one key stays on one PC. We keep it for as long as a licence can be used, because a licence that never expires has to be checkable for as long as it is used; ask and we delete it, which turns the key off for new activations.
The buying and licence pages, at account.probe-specsheet.com, set
no cookies. The licence page remembers a key you typed for 20 minutes by
carrying a signed code in its own form, not in your browser.
